YHC is currently re-reading Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Don Whitney. This is a great book that I highly recommend for all Christians and non-Christians alike. In this book, Don starts out by stating that Discipline w/o Direction is Drudgery. In other words, we need to have an adequate motivation for anything that we attempt to be disciplined in. Otherwise it becomes burdensome and is not sustainable. This applies to spiritual disciplines (reading, praying, fasting) as well as physical disciplines (exercise, eating right). My motivation for spiritual disciplines is to be conformed into the image of Christ. My motivation for physical disciplines is to be healthy and fit enough to play with my kids and future grandkids. What is your motivation for being disciplined?
